These I-Comfort fixtures started being sold after the invention of the Tungsten filament light bulb along with other manufacturers of the time such as Benjamin, Dale, Federal Electric and many others. These were sold as HIGH POWER lighting fixtures in the day. There was a big increase in power from the older carbon filament bulbs which the normal every day bulb was rated about 16 candle power. In 1910 ratings were changed from C.P (candle power) to WATTS, which gives us the starting date of this fixture circa 1910. This type fixture is found in a Pettingell Andrews Co. Catalog with the holder assembly as part number E-320. Ours is marked E-100 which means that it is earlier then 1915. Also the style of canopy in the catalog pictures differ from the E-320 fixture part and the three complete fixtures shown. The reason for this I believe would be that only the pictures of new fixtures were updated in the 1914 catalog and not the fixture part itself, which was common practice throughout many different catalogs. If I had to guess, I would say that when deciding what the part number would be or start with that they chose "E-100" in conjunction with the 100 WATT power rating. I would also guess as new items came out that they just simply added digits as new part numbers up to this 1914 example of E-320. Taking this and the 1914 slight fixture changes into consideration, I would guess that this fixture is more of a 1910 to 1912 fixture.
In the catalog these fixtures were sold many different ways to make it more economical for the consumer. With silvered shades and the complete fixture, as well as just the chain and socket, or a choice of everything but the shade. This item comes with a hand painted shade likely used in more of a home type environment, where the silvered shades were used more for industrial settings.
